The Augusta Commission approved a resolution asking the Georgia Board of Regents to include “Augusta” in the name of the new university.
The commissioners voted 6-1 to approve the resolution, with only Bill Lockett against. Commissioner Matt Aitken, who did not support a similar resolution the commission shot down in June, said he reconsidered after learning that the University of Augusta was ranked higher in surveys than Georgia Regents University.
“I felt like there was no leadership on behalf of the citizens, the alumni, (and) students to stand up with them to go through this process…,” Aitken said. “I realize the support may not be here (to get the motion passed). I also realize that we have to stand in a way that we support those citizens that bring us these concerns.”
Aitken called for commissioners to “unite behind the citizens of this city” who protested the name Georgia Regents University.
“I’m willing to take the fallout whatever comes,” he said referring to any possible negative consequences following the vote.
Commissioner Corey Johnson said the resolution ultimately would not matter.
“I’m just going to be honest with ya’ll; I’m not going to sugar-coat it,” Johnson said. “Nothing we do here, at the commission, is going to change what happens up there. Their mind has been made. As a matter of fact, they have made a resolution not to change it (the name).”
Johnson further cited what he said he believes is the major reason the BOR will not change its decision.
“It’s all about economics,” Johnson explained, prompting groans and outcry from spectators in the chamber. “It’s all about the money that’s going to be funneled into this city.”
