Currently there are 14,000 in Richmond County and 9,000 in Columbia County under the age of 5. The Greater Augusta Partnership for Literacy is trying to get these children ready for school. We all know that in California they use the reading levels of third graders to determine the prison beds needed in the future. Currently over 800 children between the two counties are receiving a book every month. Our goal is to reach at least 5000 at the end of 2013. The cost per child is $25.00 per year. Every Saturday during the month of September, beginning the 8th, there will be a reading from 10:30-11:30 at the Richmond County downtown library and the Columbia County Evans Town Center Library. We are lucky to have the following reading to children:
September 8 – Mayor Deke Copenhaver (Richmond County Library Downtown) and Columbia County Commissioner Ron Cross (Columbia County)
September 15 – Richard Rogers (Channel 12) at Richmond County and Brad Means (Channel 6) at Columbia County
September 22 – Local Firefighters (each county sending representation to the library) Fire trucks will be available at the end of the reading, if there are no emergencies
September 29 – Awaiting confirmation at Richmond County and Ryan Bowers (NFL) at Columbia County
